Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm or high-protein tofu pressed
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1 –2 tsp neutral oil plus spray for basket
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch optional, for extra crispiness
  • Optional sauces: hoisin glaze soy glaze, chili sauce

Method

  1. Press tofu for at least 30 minutes, then pat dry thoroughly with paper towels.
  2. Slice tofu into ¾–1-inch thick steaks for a firm, meaty texture.
  3. Toss tofu with soy sauce, maple syrup, spices, oil, and optional cornstarch until evenly coated.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F and lightly spray the basket with oil.
  5. Arrange tofu steaks in a single layer, leaving space for airflow.
  6. Air fry for 10–15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp on both sides.
  7. Remove from the air fryer and brush or toss with sauce while hot.
  8. Rest for 1 minute before serving to allow the crust to set.

Notes

Pressing tofu thoroughly is the key to crisp results, as excess moisture prevents browning. For maximum crunch, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket and cook in batches if needed. Add sweet sauces after cooking to prevent burning and preserve texture.
